During the winter, "heaving" can be a problem.  This is a cycle of cold, freezing nights followed by warmer, sunny days.  If too much of the root is exposed, this cycle can damage or kill a plant.  You can help protect your plants by mulching around them and checking them to make sure the roots are not exposed.  If you see exposed roots, press them back down and cover with mulch to protect them.
